Angelokastro

It is built on a skerry barrow, over Palaiokastritsa, controlling the west sea passages of the island.

It is referred for the first time on 1272, but its establishment occurred on the beginning of 13th century and it is believed that is has been built from Epirus prince Michail A’ Komninos (for others from emperor Manouil B’ Komninos (1143-1180). The castle was reinforced and polished from the Andigaves and Enets rulers.

It was named Aggelokastro over the church of Archangels which was inside it (in the place where today a newer church is standing). Aggelokastro has been one of the most important Corfu fortifications because it was capable to protect all habitants of Yiros territory.

In its interiors, two big water reservoirs and two churches (Archangels and S.Kiriaki) are even now presented. The church of Archangels was built on 1784. The church of S.Kiriaki is built inside a small cave and it is covered with wall paintings of 18th century.
